Program Overview
This program provides the school nurse with a complete review of scoliosis and an overview of the Massachusetts mandated growth screening protocol.
Program Objectives
Upon completion of this program the school nurse will be prepared to:
- Understand the definition and know the etiology of scoliosis.
- Be familiar with the 3 broad categories of scoliosis including neuromuscular, congenital, and idiopathic.
- Understand that adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common type of scoliosis and the leading cause of orthopedic problems in school aged children.
- Be familiar with postural screening including observation and the Adams Forward Bending Test.
- Be knowledgeable about the postural screening process as the first line of defense in determining if scoliosis is present.
- Know when to refer a student to a physician for spinal curvature dysfunction.

Continuing Education Information Northeastern University School Health Institute provides this continuing education program in accordance with the requirements of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing 244 CMR 5.00 the continuing education program "consists of a planned, organized learning experience designed to augment the knowledge, skills, attitudes for the enhancement of nursing practice, to the end of improving health care to the public". Nurses successfully participating in this program will receive a statement of credit for 1 contact hour. Statements of Credit may be printed on-line after successful completion of the learning assessment.
